Vastarian: Hypatia Etranzi

I don’t fear hell.¹

Earlier this year we started to create more models for Special Operations Unit Mitsukurina, an elite unit within the Adeptus Arbites, that we created a few years ago. The unit is operational on Vastarian, trying to manage the psychic upheaval. We were able to use the two new members we converted in some games at Adepticon. Due to running out of time before the convention, I was only able to partially paint the new models. Now that things have settled down, I was able to finally finish painting the leader, Hypatia Etranzi!

I took special efforts to paint volumetric highlights on the model, particularly on her gloves.

Black is a particularly tricky color to paint, so I challenged myself to paint several different tones of black on the model.

I also tried to paint a variety of different leathers on the model, each with different textures and varying levels of wear.

I painted the Special Operations Unit Mitsukurina emblem on Hypatia’s shoulder guard.

  1. That is a beautiful looking character. The different shades of blacks and browns really help to give the model more interest while keeping that sinister feeling. The lack of visible weapons also adds to this feel.
Finding hands without a weapon has always been a struggle so I have to ask where this model came from?

    1. Thank you! Trying to add different textures to cloth and elements of a model can really help it look more interesting and realistic. Finding had that are not holding weapons is indeed very difficult. These were on a plague doctor looking model in the Cities of Sigmar Freeguild Command Corps.

    2. I should also note that while the Freeguild Command was used for the hands, one was originally holding a bone saw. That hand was cut off and replaced with a Dark Eldar hand (from the helions I believe). Finding suitable hands can be tricky.

  2. They look great - the painting is excellent - the gloves and the coat and the armoured pauldrons all really look like different materials--well done!
