Lesotho 2-12: Virologist

Edith Higgins, Officio Medicae Virologist

After his success with the Curse of the Alabaster event, Jonathan Hartman (known as shibboleth02 of Instagram), decided to host a new event, this time set in the Lesotho 2-12 laboratory complex, a labyrinth research station that has been overrun by zombies! If you want to know more about the narrative of the event, Kristian Simonsen, of the Secrets of the Void fame, wrote two exciting yarns, one introducing two Inquisitors interested in doctor Ignace Valantion from Lesotho 2-12, the other dealing with an old guard veteran trying to escape being trapped with the research complex. Being intrigued by the event, which you can watch unfold by following the hashtag #lesothotwotwelve, particularly by the excellent civilian scientists from WilhelMiniatures, I decided it would be fun to build my own NPC scientist for the event!

The virologist was converted using a Death Korp medical servitor.

Higgins' laspistol was converted using a Dark Eldar Splinter pistol as a base.

To create the model, I used one of the retinue members from the Death Korp Quartermaster set from Forge World. Specifically, I used the medical servator, but removed all of her bionic servo arms and reduced the size of her backpack. This simple modification worked quite nicely to distance the model from the stock Forge World one, while keeping the iconic surgical robes that I thought were quite well suited for a simple lab coat. I replaced her arms with Death Korp ones, due to their long sleeves that fit nicely with the rest of the coat. I built a small servo arm that sprouts from her backpack with one of the tiny servos from the Rust Stalker kit. I took the small computer panel from that very servo arm to create a dataslate that she is now holding. Finally I converted a laspistol from a Dark Eldar splinter pistol that I dramatically cutdown. I decided to keep her finger on the trigger, to convey her inexperience with firearms (poor trigger control!), as a researcher is typically far from the front lines of conflict.

Instead of doing the traditional white lab-coat, we decided that blue might stand out more, marking her as a virologist.

A bloody hand print (and drawn pistol) is the first evidence that something is not quite right in Lesotho 2-12.

In a nod to graduate work as a biologist, we made her gloves purple, mimicking the colored nitrile gloves often found in labs.

I hope you like the model; and comments or thoughts are welcome! I am sure more details about the Lesotho 2-12 event will emerge in the coming days before and after the event, and would encourage everyone to follow the hashtag #lesothotwotwelve to watch things unfold!

    1. I finished the model just in time! I found out today the model is safely in Jonathan's hands and will be making the trip to Nottingham. :)

It will be interesting to see how she stands up to the horrors that have beset Lesotho 2-12.

    1. I am glad you like the conversion! It was fun to try my hand at a model that is not a trained soldier. I will need to make more in the future!

  3. Looking great – the purple gloves are a great touch, and the conversion does a great deal to bring more focus to the figure's head than the standard figure. It really helps convey a different character.

    1. Thank you for the kind words! The original figure comes across as much less human and is a little busy with the extra tanks and bionic limbs.

    1. Who knows if the nitrile gloves scientists wear in the future will still be purple? I like to think some of them will! :)

  5. Can I write some fanfic explaining the shifting pronouns?

    1. Sorry about that. The post was written in segments, before the sex of the model was decided upon. I have went back and modified the post to make it consistent.

But, if you are excited, do write that fanfiction!

  6. Great work, that is a very cool model and the blue should stand out nicely in the corridors of Lesotho.

    1. The blue certainly will stand out in those grim and gloomy corridors! Hopefully it does not get Edith killed immediately!
