In the grim dark future there is only war! |
The new edition of Warhammer 40,000 is soon to be released, and Games Workshop has been revealing a lot of information about its changes from previous editions via their Community site. We spend the episode talking about some of these changes from the perspective of people who did not get too invested in the previous edition, partially because of how bloated it became and how little it focused on the narrative elements that we enjoy most.

Good job as always gents. Having not actively played normal 40k since 5th or so I have high hopes that it will climb down from the madness 7th appeared to be. From what we've seen so far I think it will be worth at least dipping my feet back in the waters, maybe you will even get to bust out those Mandrakes?
ReplyDeleteYeah, I am pretty optimistic about it. I think it will be much easier to convince myself to try to play a game, and not go into it knowing who was going to win based on what army they were using. If Adam ever gets out his Dark Eldar army, maybe he will use the Mandrakes!
DeleteI only play 2nd edition 40K these days, and I totally lost interest in contemporary 40K after 4th/5th edition. I may well give this latest version ago, especially if they distribute the core rules and army lists for free! Good episode, as usual.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Yeah, I think the free rule distribution will help get more people to give the new edition a chance. The fact that all the armies will be balanced (or that some attempt was made) is pretty exciting too!
DeleteYeah, the last time they balanced all the armies at once was 3rd edition; and though a good idea it was half hearted in execution. It will be interesting to see what they do.
DeleteYeah, 3rd was pretty half hearted. I hope this is better... I think it will be though, as they are changing how the rules are distributed, while in 3rd it was always intended to release codex book in the future to give the "real" rules for the units.
DeleteI was sooo enthusiastic... and then suddenly you find out that the new almost-true scale marines aren't new and improved space marine models. No, they are new super-super marines that are much cooler and better than the old ones. What are GW playing at? Pathetically bad writing. This has (almost) completely killed my interest.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it seems like an odd choice, but I guess I can understand their desire not to upset the masses with SM armies by replacing the normal marine. I also have little hope that the narrative that accompanies these new marines will be good. All told, I am not sure what to think of them.
DeleteCouldn't you just use them as "true scale space marines" and not use normal space marines? Maybe games workshop is actually giving both types of players the chance to play 40K?
DeleteYeah, I think that is probably their idea behind the release. If you want to go wild and build a whole new army of true-scale marines, awesome. But if you just want a new unit or two, that is good too.
DeleteOk, but then why not just release them with the rationale of representing a new armour mark? That way they could have been gradually integrated, kind of like when they switched from the tiny old plastic terminators. This way, if you use them as true scale marines, everyone will just see them as an army of "new super marines". Come to think of it, the release of the uber-marines will kill true scale as we know it, as ALL true scale armies will likely be seen as uber-marines by the majority of players, which will force us into designing freaking enourmous true scale uber marines. I still can't quite get over the cheer stupid cheesines of this.
DeleteI'm looking forward to the new rules and hopefully playing more games if 40k personally. I'm cautiously optimistic the the new marines will look better than the current line. I've always wanted to build a true scale marine army but lack the sculpting skills to build them myself. Hopefully these new sculpts will help me achieve my goal.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I am looking forward to seeing the new marine models too. And even if they are not perfect, I am sure they will help people convert true-scale marines more easily. Because as it is, it is far to much work to really make an army in true-scale.
