The Pilgrym: Rules for the Church of the Red Athenæum

The Hunt begins.

After 7 furious months of work, the Pilgrym game has finally been played and we are back in the United States.  The event was a fantastic success, truly culminating everyone’s hard work and passion.  Over the next few weeks we are going to be creating a few posts detailing the event.  To start things off, we wanted to share the rules that we devised for our warband, the Church of the Red Athenæum.  The game was played using a modified version of the Necromunda ruleset, with a focus on narrative elements rather than strict adherence to any particular book.  For the Church, we wanted to take special effort to convey that most of its members are not fighters; they are civilians that are missing limbs and other body parts, further separating them from any sort of fighting elite.  They are, however, extremely devoted to their cause and due to their lives of suffering, able to withstand a lot of pain.  The only exception to this are the members of their military arm, the Order of the Crimson Hour, which are trained for combat and therefore have firearms, and Roland Arnesen, a sleeper agent of the Ordo Machinum.

Weapon reloads: Weapon reloads do Not have a potential to explode in this list.  They are all small arms, so it is not relevant.  If more powerful weapons were present, like bolters or plasmaguns, the reloads would have a potential to explode.

Infa-red sight: reduces targets cover by 1 if only firing single shot

Infra-red goggles: 2x distance to spot enemies

Bio-booster: 1-3 flesh wound; 4-5 down, 6 out; unlimited use

Respirator: reroll failed T test against gas

Refractor field: 5+ invulnerable save

Fast shot: Can shoot as many times as A, can be multiple targets

Hip shooting: Can shoot if he ran, but at -1 pen.

Memento Mori: his stalking headless form reminds one that life is fleeting; causes Fear

    1. Honestly, I would love to see the other's too! It was such a complex and long game that we never really stopped and reviewed each warband's rules, but rather just got straight to the game. The rules we created were ultimately just a rough framework to help the game run smoothly.

    1. I am glad you like them and that they might provide some guidance for your upcoming game! I would just recommend to keep the story and the characters in mind when creating rules, rather than gaming power, as it results in more interesting moments. I cannot wait to see what you come up with!

    3. I look forward to see what transpires with your game as well, and how you create rules. I found it a fun way to continue to explore the characters. Most of your characters are a lot more of warriors than what our Church was, so you will likely have more room for creating some cool characters.

      Hopefully in a few days I will have a post up that is largely just a long strand of pictures in chronological order with captions pertaining to the game. I then want to write up a short story detailing the last moments of the game from the perspective of Roland. Lots to do!

  4. First, let me take a moment to fawn over the models once again as they are amazing- It is absolutely wonderful to see them on the tabletop in action! Having played Necromunda myself long ago (and probably the ONLY GW game I have ever played where my stuff was painted), I can only imagine the hugely satisfying experience that was fielding an entirely scratch-built gang that was painted to such a high standard. Then to add to that the company you were with. Outstanding.

    I look really forward to hearing about the battles. The rules for the Church exude almost as much character as the models do, but without being heavy-handed or overpowered. Except for Roland who is suitably dangerous- holy crap he is good. I can't wait to see how the church as a whole fared- but I am expecting the greatest kill tally from him!

    1. Thanks! It certainly would be awesome if we were able to continue to play games on Terra with our warbands frequently enough that we could have a progression system with experience points and the like, but do to us all living at different locations across the globe, that is not possible :(
