The Pilgrym: Vasili Abramovitch, Congregation member of the Church of the Red Athenæum

There will be blood.

In our continuing effort to showcase all of the members of our Pilgrym group, we wanted to show you the finished, painted form of the most obvious mutant that we created, Vasili Abramovitch!

Vasili Abramovitch, Congregation member of the Church of the Red Athenæum
Vasili is one of the many mutants that worship the Emperor as a member of the Church of the Red Athenæum.  The Church has always welcomed all within its ranks, provided that they worship the Emperor, hallowed be His name, and see the current Imperium to be the corrupt, corpulent bureaucracy that it is.  They recognized that the mutant population, struggling beneath the Steps, were some of the most dedicated souls on all of Terra, venerating the Emperor despite the persecution they were subjected to, in His name, by witch hunters and venators.

Vasili has truly embraced a life of suffering in the Emperor's name, long gone is one of his arms, his ears, and maybe even his eyes...
Painting Abramovitch was quite straightforward and quick; his simple pose and lack of any major weapons other than a sheathed straight blade helped a lot.  I wanted to keep his robes simple and pedestrian, so I settled on a simple brown.  The loin cloth gave me an opportunity to add a little more color to the model, including the characteristic red of the Church, and some yellow (sort of a throwback to the some of the classic ‘Eavy Metal miniatures from the early and mid 90s).  His large belt buckle gave me the opportunity to paint the Church’s winged hourglass logo.  Like all the other members of the church, I experimented with the skin tones on Vasili, giving him a pallid and unhealthy white tone, complete with some deep shadows hiding his eyes in darkness! To make the eye on his palm stand out, I painted it a bright yellow, adding to the creepy nature of its presence.

To emphasize the vast number of humble civilians without any military training in the Church, Vasili does not have any weapons other than a knife.

I hope you like the model!  Let me know what you think of him and if you have any questions on the painting!

  1. I am glad you like the yellow too, and it really does take one back to the old ‘Eavy Metal painters! It is such a small thing, but I really think it makes him stand out.

  2. I have been following this blog for a long time now and have thoroughly enjoyed the entirety of it. The Iron Sleet Invitational project has been phenomenal both in planning and in execution and Adam I can hardly believe you've painted so much in so little! Love your paint style and your mastery of the color red is nothing short of remarkable. The highlights on this model particularly on the talberd and the flesh are subtle but bring a lot more to the model in general than one would expect at first glance. His head really creeps you out too! The gaunt cheeks really emphasize the fact that he is a mutant, maybe at first even more so than the eye, until you see it! Well done.

    1. Thanks for continuing to follow us through our adventures in miniature wargaming! Connecting with the wider community is why we started the blog in the first place!

I am glad you like how the Church has come into being, it has certainly been a huge amount of work, but I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to take part in it, and to push myself far beyond where I felt I could go.
